About Toronto Triple Threat
Understanding that our youth represent the future of our communities, we believe access to the sport of basketball, without the stress of financial ability hindering participation, will develop opportunities that all youth deserve.
Toronto Triple Threat is the name of a basketball program developed in 2003 by people who have significant backgrounds in playing and coaching basketball and who are interested in delivering to inner-city boys and girls of ages 6 to 18 an interactive, life-skills development opportunity through the sport of basketball.
Based on the principles of fair play, teamwork, and individual growth through sport, Toronto Triple Threat takes a whole person approach to developing young people, not only by teaching basketball skills, but also by providing an environment in which respect, cooperation, participation and self-awareness are promoted. Toronto Triple Threat has earned a reputation for providing energetic, fun, high-quality and wholesome experiences for children and teens.
Skills and Development
From a basketball skills and development perspective, our coaches are dedicated to teaching skills and fundamentals of the game. The tenets of the triple threat of basketball – pass, dribble, and shoot – are combined with defensive skills and game play in an environment that fosters fun and fair play.
From a life skills and development perspective, our goal is to teach teamwork, respect, achievement and accountability.
Personnel
Our organization is staffed completely by volunteers. Our coaches and instructors include former International, National, and University/College level players dedicated and devoted to teaching basketball and developing young athletes. All of our instructors are experienced and qualified youth coaches. Our personnel are providing their time, energy, and experience, for the benefit of the participants in the program. Their motivation is purely to “pay it forward” as they each benefited from such development opportunities in their youth. The volunteers have made a long-term commitment to building Toronto Triple Threat into a quality inner-city basketball program.
Location and Facilities
The area served by the program is primarily Toronto West Central. Gym time has been obtained from Humberside Collegiate, Oakwood Collegiate Institute, Carleton Village Elementary School, Western Technical Commercial School, Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School, Saint-Frère-André Catholic Secondary School, and St. Oscar Romero Catholic Secondary School. Efforts are continually made to obtain more gym time and to attempt to reduce the cost of gym time.
Program Development Plan
Toronto Triple Threat will field 18 developmental teams (8 girl teams and 10 boy teams) in an average year. Starting in September and running until May, each team’s season includes the following:
- 2 practices per week
- 12 to 25 games
- 2 to 3 tournaments
- Attendance at Ontario Championships
Toronto Triple Threat also operates a Skills Program in the fall semester for boys and girls aged 6 to 14 as a means of introducing basketball to an even greater number of children. The older-age teams will also be involved as instructors’ assistants for the Skills Program. These activities are designed as a method of teaching responsibility, leadership and community involvement.
Funding
Toronto Triple Threat’s goal is to provide its inner-city basketball program to players at a very low cost. This structure is designed to ensure that ability to pay is not a determining factor in participation. We charge very modest user fees for compared to other similar programs offered throughout Toronto. We also engage the players in fundraising activities as a means of teaching value. The balance of our funding must be raised through other sources.
Structure
We are a registered non-profit corporation in Ontario. Our bursary fund is both an Ontario Registered Charity and a federal charitable organization that can issue tax receipts.
Comprised of nine directors, we are proud of the diversity of our Board as it reflects a broad demographic mix, consistent with the community we serve. Our directors are generous with their time; they serve purely as volunteers and not for any personal gain.
Donations
Donations to Toronto Triple Threat Basketball Club constitute tax-deductible business expenses.
Donations to the Camp Toronto Triple Threat Bursary Fund constitute charitable donations that are eligible for corresponding tax credits for individuals.
